Sabreen Islam: Lost In Space

Emerging Bengali-New Zealand singer-songwriter Sabreen Islam released her dazzling and powerful debut EP ROOM SERVICE at the beginning of the month. We wanted to know what inspired the EP of 6 indie-pop gems, so asked her if she got lost in space with her record player, what are 5 albums she couldn't live without?

Album #1

Taylor Swift - Reputation

"I could easily just make this list all Taylor Swift albums, but I'll try to show some restraint. This album is the literal definition of iconic and has so many good songs that all link together and tell a story from start to finish. Don't Blame Me? Getaway Car? Delicate? On the same album? Too good. This album was so over-hated when it came out and people are just starting to realise how great it was, but I proudly reserve my bragging rights that I've been a rep stan since day 1."

Album #2

Taylor Swift - Evermore

"This is a hug in album form. Every song is so beautifully crafted and witchy and wonderful, and it came out right when I needed it to. It's a beautiful beautiful album that is slept on way too much! Whenever winter rolls around, this album is on repeat. Favourites are willow, champagne problems, tis the damn season and cowboy like me."

Album #3

Halsey - If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power

"And the power she has. Every single song on this album is a portrayal of female rage and love and I eat it up every time. I think the song 'I am not a woman, I'm a god' altered my brain chemistry the first time I heard it. It'll have you raging and crying, sometimes at the same time. It's SO good. We love female rage."

Album #4

Lord Huron - Lonesome Dreams

"You know, sometimes you just want to run away and live in the woods in a hippie van and quit your job and spend your days in a sleepy seaside town. This album is that for me, since alas, I can't actually do that in reality. It's a beautiful folky, dreamy album that feels really timeless. I'm working on adding it to my vinyl collection when I can find it somewhere!"

Album #5

Passenger - Young As The Morning, Old As The Sea

"There are some albums that come out that completely encapsulate where you were in your life. This album did that for me when I was fourteen. I was such a happy, nature-loving, road-tripping little tween at the time and this album soundtracked a lot of really happy memories for me. Every time I listen to it, I'm taken back to those sunny, lovely days with my friends. 'Everything' is one of the best songs to exist ever. "

Sabreen Islam: Playlist Picks

As always, we asked Sabreen if she could hook us up with her go-to Spotify playlist for an even deeper dive into her inspirations and favourite songs. Here she gives you "a comprehensive and slightly chaotic list of my favourite songs of all time." Enjoy!
